Things I am Thankful for

My family- (this is Nora's family portrait of her extended family)

God's amazing creation (Nora and Mor-Mor watching the full moon rise)

Giving to others- and having a daughter who gets truly excited about giving

That we had a delicious Thanksgiving meal and a wonderful holiday week. (Nora was especially thankful for the sparkling apple cider)

A November Walk

The Death of Autumn

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

When reeds are dead and straw to thatch the marshes,
And feathered pampas-grass rides into the wind
Like ag├Ęd warriors westward, tragic, thinned
Of half their tribe; and over the flattened rushes,
Stripped of its secret, open, stark and bleak,
Blackens afar the half-forgotten creek,––
Then leans on me the weight of the year, and crushes
My heart. I know that beauty must ail and die,
And will be born again,––but ah, to see
Beauty stiffened, staring up at the sky!
Oh, Autumn! Autumn!––What is the Spring to me?

Good Things

A fire on a snowy day
(I took this at a funny angle so that you could also see the beautiful bookshelves Erik recently built- we have one on each side of the fireplace and they look great- I am still figuring out how to best fill them)

Wearing ALL your pairs of clean underwear at once

Making a marker "forest for Chicken"

Folding laundry for Mama without being asked- Nora has always loved to help me out with everything I do around the house- and lately she has started to be truly helpful in the sense that I don't have to go back and redo everything she "helped" me with.

Nora has been requesting a nice, hot shower every night. Erik and I both hate baths and never take them- so I guess it makes sense that she would love showers so much- I just didn't expect that she would give up her baths so young. It seems to relax her more for bedtime- maybe from all the steam. She likes the water HOT!

And when she's done she loves to clean the door with the squeegee.

I took these a couple weeks ago but I wanted to share them. I took Nora to get her hair cut at a barber shop on our Main St that is one of the oldest existing barber shops in the country. It has been there since our town's founding in 1872.

It has the striped poles out front-

beautiful tile work around the sinks

old fashioned barber chairs and even a wood stove in the back of the store-

I wish I had gotten a better picture of the little seat that they clipped on for her to sit on- but you can see a bit of it poking out under her in that picture above.

Nora was very focused on what lollipop flavor to pick when it was over, so I am not sure she appreciated the charm of the place as much as I did, but she seemed happy with her haircut. What a great place this would be for first haircut pictures- especially of a little boy! I sent Erik to try it out after we went but he wasn't thrilled with the cut so I think he'll be back the chain in a nearby strip mall. He's not quite as enamored with everything vintage as is his wife ;) Oh well!

Tiny Tutus Class

Nora started ballet this past friday. She's in a "Tiny Tutus" class of 3 year old girls. It was so fun to watch them all and Nora seemed to really enjoy herself.

They started off with a song where they pretended to sleep and then wake up

They were instructed to hold hands to form a circle. It was quite sweet as Nora and this little girl grabbed each others hands and held on long past the ending of the circle dance.

Then the "princess walk" where they walked across the room balancing a crown on their heads. I love the two thumb suckers in the background of this picture- I didn't notice them when I was taking it!

Nora's Office

This week Nora has been on a drawing binge- literally filling sketchpads with drawings of "happy tigers" "happy ghosts" "mama when she was a little girl" "scarecrows" and various other things. She likes to draw in her "office"- which is a cozy little spot right on the living room couch:

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Erik and I are going to Denver for a little get-away by ourselves, which we are so looking forward to.

Halloween Weekend

We had a fun filled weekend of Halloween activities, starting on Saturday with our town's annual Halloween Parade down Main Street.

Here is my Angelina Ballerina in her costume, showing off some dance moves while she is waiting for the parade to begin.

I was happy to find an Angelina Ballerina doll at the thrift shop last week whose outfit just happened to match Nora's costume perfectly (we added the little pumpkin :)

We were both mice this year!

Waiting with Daddy for the parade to begin

There were some really creative and fun costumes in the parade. I am not the most creative person when it comes to costumes so I am always impressed with what people come up with. All the high school bands marched in the parade and afterward the kids could trick or treat from the stores along Main Street.

After the parade my little mouse had some bouncy castle fun

And then on sunday, after church- a short afternoon snooze-

and some watching to see if other kids were out and about-

then we headed out- for candy! (I guess we should have waited to put our coats on til after pictures!)

It was a beautiful evening- the sunset was incredible-

and Nora had a lovely time trick or treating!
