Honey

After several days of Nora having pink eye, a bad cold, constant night coughing (and consequent vomiting) we're just getting back to good health here. I'll post more pics of our January doings later this week.

Nora drew this today- it is a picture of me giving her honey to stop her coughing. I'm on the right and she's on the left- you can see the "honey" around her mouth. We're both wearing lovely little hats.

Preschool- as well as all the other schools in our area- is canceled because of the predicted extreme cold temperatures. In true Colorado fashion it was 65 degrees this past weekend!

Nora's Christmas Adventures

At Christmas time, Nora:

Played Santa and visited Daddy at work, where she was spoiled with toys from the nurses and many princess stickers from Daddy

Visited Zoo Lights with her cousin Sina

Wrote a letter to Santa, leaving carrots for his reindeer (except for Blitzen, who doesn't like carrots, so he got celery) and got a thank you chocolate (and a lot of crumbs) from Santa

Got really excited Christmas morning about everything Santa brought her

as well as what Santa Mouse brought her

After Christmas she got to go skiing,

spend lots of time with Sina goofing off together in the mountains,

and then they even did some dancing to celebrate the New Year!

Now that I'm caught up from Christmas I can resume regular postings!

Making Lefse

Lefse is a traditional Norwegian dish that is eaten over the holidays- you can read all about it here. The best way to describe it is to say it's a tortilla made out of potato. Nora learned how to make it this year with the help of Grandma and Grandpa (Erik's parents) and she did a great job-I think the lefse making tradition in the family will need to pass straight to her, as I still trying to master my mom's amazing pie crust.

Working the chilled dough

Rolling out the dough on the pastry board

It requires a special rolling grooved rolling pin that is covered by a sock like material

Cooking it on the lefse griddle

When it's all cooked it gets wrapped up and put in the fridge

And here's Nora's little taste of the final product- you slather it with butter and sprinkle sugar on that and then roll it up.

Christmas Lights

I am so behind with blogging photos- but each day this week I'm going to post some of our holiday pictures from last month so I can get fully caught up!

One December night before all our guests arrived we got Nora into her PJs, wrapped her in a blanket and drove around town to see Christmas lights. Luckily the paper listed the best light displays so we didn't have to drive too aimlessly. I'll spare you much of the lovely shimmering tackiness that we saw but just to give you an idea--

These people had theirs synched to a radio station- so you turned your radio to that station when you drove up and then all the lights and the light display on the screen moved in synch with that music.

Nora was transfixed with it all-

101219_December10_-22

This family had about 50 different inflatables set up. My favorite was this Santa in an airstream, as I have fantasies about traveling the country in an Airstream trailer one day...

101219_December10_-14

On the way home we stopped at a local church that had a living nativity set up. This was nice, but it was oddly a drive-by-nativity- I took this picture from our car window. I think the church hosting it didn't have a very large parking lot so they figured it would be easier to have people just pull up to the scene and then drive away, or maybe they figured more people would come if they didn't have to get out of their cars?! One of those "only in America" moments.

101219_December10_-10

It was really fun and I'll think we'll definitely make this an annual tradition!

Happy New Year-- and looking back at December

Happy New Year to all! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We had a great, busy holiday with lots of family here and I am looking forward to getting back into a normal routine. I'll have some holiday photos to share over the next week or so to get myself caught up.

And of course one of my new year's resolutions is to take more photos. I personally think that should be everybody's resolution. Or at least to make sure that you are regularly recording little bits of your life in a way that is meaningful to you. And perhaps "more photos" is not the right way to say it; I should say that my resolution is to take more "meaningful" photos. Sometimes this means taking more photos- and remembering to bring the camera along to even some of the mundane things we do- and sometimes this just means being more thoughtful about what to capture.

Here a few random pics of things I don't want to forget from this past December.

Nora's adorable holiday performance at preschool

101216_December10_-3

The performance was followed by her eating her weight in cookies and treats during the preschool Christmas party. She sure can clear through a buffet table!

101216_December10_-17

Her final ballet class of the season-

101217_December10_-4

She was proud to get her certificate-

101217_December10_-19

Nora's sudden obsession with soup. She wants chicken noodle soup for breakfast, lunch and dinner

101210_December10_-3

Our neighbor's singing Christmas tree. We drove around to see some dramatic holiday light displays (pictures to come) but Nora loved this little tree whose lights danced in tune with a tinny sounding Christmas carol from a little speaker- we had to go see it every time we went outside.
